Shingle roofs include metal, fiberglass and other shingle types.

Shingle Roofs

There are various alternate approaches to selecting the construction material and installation method for a fixed roof, but the most common by far is the shingle roof.

roof shinglesRoof shingles are generally small, flat panels or tiles which are laid in an overlapping technique to cover the entire surface of the roof. They can be sourced in various sizes, shapes and colors and manufactured from various materials, including slate, composite, fiberglass and asphalt etc.
Though fiberglass is still the most common material for residential roofs, we are seeing an increasing number of metal shingles utilized, specifically those with a stone coating. A variety of stone-chip colors and textures provides for strength and durability with a very pleasing aesthetic. Coated metal shingles are also amongst the most durable, with typical warranty in the 50 year plus range.

Where longevity is the main concern, there are certain metal shingles and other shingle types which can be purchased with a lifetime material warranty. This of course is contingent on an approved installation method.

Generally shingles must be laid on a surface/structure was has been specifically prepared for the size and type of shingle selected. This means that the earlier in the process you consult with Elite Roofing, your specialist roofing contractor, the better. We can guide you through the selection process and ensure a smooth and problem free installation.

And with many shingle types to choose from, we can guarantee that your finished roof will meet or exceed your expectations,  both in terms of aesthetics and durability.

Roof Considerations and Preparation for Shingles

In many instances we find certain code which prohibits the use of certain types of roofing material. In the case of shingles, we often see a preference for locally sourced materials which can change from location to location. We also encounter a more stringent approach to fire retardation, with the need for Class A material in most instances. So we always work closely with your local building inspector to determine acceptable materials and installation techniques.

In most cases we utilize a moisture resistant under-sheet to prevent any ingress of rain/weather into the building. Since shingles are relatively small, they do have the slight disadvantage of coming with the largest seem/edge from any of the other roofing types, therefore it is generally necessary to install a weatherproof underlay. In instances where a roof pitch of 4:12 or greater is attainable, an underlay can often be dispensed with.

The application and attachment method varies depending on material types, but it is important to secure the shingles adequately as loose or missing shingles can lead to water ingress and also the degradation of surrounding shingles due to trapped surface water. Where a typical residential installation incorporates the common fiberglass roofing shingle, a lifespan of 25 – 45 years can be expected, provided the installation is conducted to specification.

For a roof where the majority of shingles still have longevity, worn/damaged or missing shingles can generally be replaced quite simply, perhaps adding a further 5 or 10 years to the overall life of your roof.

A general repair or maintenance procedure involves lifting the edges of damaged shingles, removing nails, clearing old cement/adhesive, repairing the underlay if necessary and cleaning the damaged area from mold, dirt and debris.

We can then slide the new shingle into place and re-attach it using a method congruent with the original installation, and complete any additional sealing which may be necessary. In most cases there will be some visual disparity between the old/new shingles, so you will need to decide if this creates an issue with overall aesthetics.

Common areas for maintenance include the shingles around roof dorms and chimneys, which generally attract more wear and disruption than shingles on flat roof areas. Additional sealing may be required on these exposed areas and it may often be necessary to reseal a much larger area than that of the missing shingles.

As you can see there are a wide range of options when it comes to selecting an appropriate roofing material for your home or business. Therefore we recommend that you involve us at the earliest opportunity in your building or repair cycle.

Elite Roofing have provided new roofing installations in and around Maryland, Virginia and D.C and all of our roofing installations come with a minimum 10 year guarantee.
